MY WEB MANIFESTO:

I will make my internet fun. I will make my internet for sharing. I will make my internet for community. I will make my internet out of love.

I want to love the internet again.

I'm tired of platforms, algorithms, competition, infinite growth. I want to share things with my friends. I want to take what I love about making zines -- having full power over what you make, how you make it, and who gets to see it -- and applying it to the web.

Over the past decade, the internet has been draining my life force instead of filling me back up with love. Making art but having it referred to as "content." Sharing a video of my cat and then being prompted to "reach more viewers" with my next one. The internet was making me miserable, both when I shared things and when I consumed things. To see every 5% of fun things my friends posted, I had to endure 95% detestable advertisements, desperation for visibility, and violence, violence, violence. I'm done. I'm not letting billionaires and capitalism dictate my experience online.

I used to love this place. I WILL love it again.

I will craft my website with my hands. I will learn from the generous people around me. I will make galleries hosted on my own space and I will share them only with people who care about me. I will not compete, I will share. I will find delight in every corner, and I will not find violence.

I will make my internet out of love.

  • MY PERSONAL MANIFESTO:

The currency of anarchy is friendship.

    1. Never peddle in absolutes.

Resist binary thinking. Understand that the truth resists simplicity. Remember that two things can be true at once.

    2. Refuse to compete.

Don't treat the creation and maintenance of your art practice, relationships, or joy as a zero-sum game. Frame everything you do as part of a community effort and not an individual pursuit. You are part of a community; raise one another up.

    3. Pursue of legacy of kindness.

I don't care if people remember my art, my comics, or my work. What's important is that when people think of me they can say "oh them? They were very nice." When you're gone, people will remember the times you were kind to them. Always help people. That's what you want to be remembered for.

    4. Balance fun and harm thoughtfully

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, etc. etc., but that doesn't mean you can't make thoughtful decisions about what you choose to consume. The system is broken, but that doesn't mean you have to refuse to operate in it. Stay alive and stay happy while doing your best to do less harm to others.

    5. Rest

You do not have to earn rest. You are entitled to rest as a human being. You don't have to earn food, snacks, naps, vacations, or videogame time, by workign a certain amount, or at all. Everyone deserves rest.

    6. Share your abundance

Give often. Give often. Give often. You have extra.
